How to Build Firewall Policies for East West Traffic

Following on from Professor Wool’s previous lesson, this new whiteboard lesson presents a step-by-step process for writing firewall policies for East-West traffic:

  • Deploy firewalls with the default setting of ‘allow’.
  • Use an iterative process of discovering and identifying the legitimate traffic, and then write explicit ‘allow’ rules for all valid business traffic that goes through the segment.
  • Change the default action from ‘allow’ to ‘deny,’ and start filtering traffic in the environment for real to increase security within East-West data center traffic.
