As 2011 rolls along, it’s time for those New Year resolutions. So here’s one I would like to throw out – Automate More!
These days, it seems like all of us are being asked to do more with less. One option – work longer hours, skip lunch breaks and don’t take any vacations (I sincerely hope no one is nodding their head in agreement now). Perhaps a better option – Automate!
When it comes to managing the network security policy, I am still amazed how many organizations go through manual audit and analysis. If spending days sifting through spreadsheets containing thousands of firewall rules to prepare for your next audit is your cup of tea, all the power to you. But if you would like to spend your time actually making IT and your organization run better, perhaps automating these labor-intensive and error prone tasks should be your New Year resolution.
If you believe Gartner predictions for 2011 and beyond “By 2015, tools and automation will eliminate 25 percent of labor hours associated with IT services”, so maybe it’s time for a head start. And just in case you were wandering, there is no forecast that IT folks will consequently spend a quarter of their time at the beach…
Looking forward to a great 2011!
